My name is Sieger Burger and I am passionate about creating a regenerative world. As long as we over-extract or mine the resources of our planet, we are destroying it. But if we make regenerative systems, we can restore our beautiful blue planet.
Water has always fascinated me, because too much water, too little water or water of the wrong quality means death, while the right amount of the right quality at the right moment can create an amazing abundance of life. So my formal education is in water management and geohydrology (my masters is in integrated water resources management), but during my career I have moved more and more towards landscape restoration and regeneration. That is why I also have done the permaculture training "Greening the desert" with Geoff Lawton and recently also have done the training at the SoilFoodWeb school.
I've worked in various places, from Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania to Zimbabwe, and I've realised that it's all about designing the right systems that suit the local environment. Every place is unique, so every place needs a design that is suitable for that place, both in the design of the water harvesting system and the plants that are used.
I am a person with a strong holistic approach to regenerative water, soil and vegetation management. I look at the whole biophysical system and I'm keen to be involved in projects where I can apply this. I'm able to carry out landscape analysis, support people in the design of the regenerative system and train in a participatory way to equip them to understand their own landscapes and what they can do to regenerate the landscape. I recently worked on creating of an online training, based on this holistic approach to landscape restoration; "An introduction to soil, water and vegetation conservation in watershed management" available on the Disaster Ready platform.
